She nearly peeled rubber leaving behind what she felt was precariously, a made-eye contact with seeming hoodlums. Mary, 28, recently divorced, liked hip hop but not when played at loud decibels, especially on the street, out of cars, by people she felt were menacing. With their bass pounding out of the beat up Toyota Corolla's fully equipped speaker system, the proud array of some high school drop out's hard work, she pretended not to be annoyed. As she glanced at the kid in the bandanna and wife beater, he eyed her flowing blonde hair and Jacki-O sunglasses, making remarks to his buddy about her. MK, as she is nicknamed in her various Geneva women's clubs, was eager to get home to start planning the Geneva Tour of Houses. MK couldn't wait to get back to her lovely Victorian, on Washington Street, and pour herself a tall glass of Chardonnay, and have a little plug of her beloved Ativan so that she could sleep a few winks beforehand and work late into the night.

MK loved to work on the planning for the Tour of Houses and had been doing it for the past 5 years, showcasing the community's historically significant collection of homes. Even when she was married, MK would pour heart and soul into the annual weekend long event, gaining much local notoriety as the transplanted society queen, turned Finger Lakes socialite.

Herself, a Conservative raised, blond haired, blue eyed princess from Midwestern Pioneer roots, a transplant from a wealthy Texas farm town, MK recently went through a bitter divorce. The split, which resulted in her husband's suicide and her daughter being sent to Houston (to be raised by her grandparents), she had somewhat gotten over only two years prior. Mary Kay's daughter, Fay, and her own mom and dad, were sixteen hundred miles away and it was very difficult corresponding, but was the only way for MK to focus on her job as a nurse practitioner for the elderly in the upstate region. MK's father's income was a solid foundation based on the oil welling economy of coastal Texas and provided for a safe haven, for Fay, while with them.

Tonight, the Ativan was working it's absurdly delicious mixture with the wine. As the planning papers for the Tour of Houses fell to the floor, MK drifted into a comatose sleep. Hours later, MK awoke and lit a cigarette, and became voraciously engulfed in her event plans. The problem she was finding with the house tour usually dealt with the planned peak hours, when what were considered to be the premier houses to be showcased, versus the smaller venues of recently added house tours. Other details surrounding what the caterers were to serve for hors d'oeuvres, which local wines were to be featured, at who's recently renovated pantried kitchens and dining rooms, could bog MK down. Spry and with much nervous energy, she could get flustered but she always plugged away and worked to make the city's premier historal social event a success. The Smithsons, who had been showcasing their massive Greek Revival for the past 20 years, on Delancey, never gave MK any appreciation for her tireless work. The Smithsons, the Orisofskans, the Millertons, and the Karps, were always downplaying MK's work on the highly involved social weekend-long event. Of course, they were well aware of MK's adulterous behavior before her divorce, and did not approve of her being a newbie in Geneva society. They could never trust her, even though she was profoundly innocent, beautiful, and irresistibly charming. She really was a lovely girl, and every man in the community wanted her.

Geneva Has a Skyline

The collection of buildings and homes with classical and neo classical architectural styles is impressive. However, several of her quoins and parapets are weathered or slump and bow with the thick arduous heir of their family exoduses. The growth of subdivided, scattered modest houses have been propagated on the perimeter of Geneva as per what each and every city in our nation builds for (and suffers from - escape from blight, only temporarily subjugated by racial divide and operated upon by subsidiary corporation). More than half of her original homes are of either a classical Greek revival, Gothic, Romanesque, Italianate, Federal, and then became the popular Victorian, one hundred years later. The former slums and downtempo neighborhoods of the twenty teens were popularized upon in the 2020's by renegade fringe groups made up of new urban planners who fled the isolation of metropolitan coastal areas, affected by the oil spill of 2010, for city cores they felt were worthy of reconstituting. As there was a sporadically poisoning consistency of oil slicks upon the estuaries around New York City, Washington DC, Baltimore, Boston, and Philadelphia, several left for higher ground. The economic shell of Geneva, was still in tact enough to offer refuge. By 2010, a mellow vibe, and exquisitely ethnically diverse undercurrent was represented in Geneva, making the city accessible to many younger groups who did not feel threatened by color, or socioeconomic class differences. Latent with availability, rents were cheap enough to attract young families, entrepreneurs, and civil disobedience organizations against the OilCorp government agencies of larger U.S. cities.

Subsequently, the FSHA, former HUD, (renamed Federal Suburban Housing Authority, in 2014, for reasons unknown) decided upon peculiarly bizarre and capricious descrimanatory practices around certain younger neighborhoods of suburban Manhattan after massive Information Technology workman riots broke out in several former white collar communities. This also spilled several younger well educated factions out to rural cities throughout the Northeast. Over the last decade, a growing divide created by the new oil economy created massive polarization between the petro-pharma industries and the many smaller sustainabilty based organizations trying to compete.

Mennonite Cowboy Bob

Roberto Ephraim Ezekiel Smith was originally an Ecuadorian orphan who was once abandoned in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, at a tender age of three. Thankfully, he was adopted immediately by a caring Amish family from Intercourse. Robert, as he was called within the tightly knit religious community, actually assimilated quite easily to the Amish lifestyle. Even though he was from a Latin American descent, due to his austere Anglo American features (with blondish hair and blue eyes) looked more like Pennsylvania Deutsch, rather than someone from Ecuador.

Roberto was brought up in the strict religious training of the Amish tradition. He was taught the importance in maintaining a simple lifestyle within an agrarian and devout biblical adherence. He was raised on a farm in a setting as scenic as any Hudson River School's painted landscape. On his family's farm were many flocks of sheep. Beautiful herds of dairy, many groups of poultry, and fields of both wheat and corn seemed to stretch to as far as eternity. As a young lad, he was impressionable enough to have never suspected he was ever anything but the product of the Amish influence. He also never thought he could have ever come from anywhere else than that of Lancaster County, PA. Yet, as Roberto Sandoval (his real name) grew older, he tended to drift apart from the rest of the other kids, who were born of Intercourse.

.

Joseph J.
